Cathead Mountain – Closed

When deciding on what hike to go on this weekend, I took a look at a guide book I had on my bookshelf and decided to try out Cathead Mountain. So I followed the directions to Northville and began looking for the trail head. I couldn't find it and just happened to come across Lapland Lake Cross Country Ski Resort. They are a client of ours where I work so I decided to stop in and say hello (and also to get directions). I was informed that Cathead Mountain was closed to the Public due to the owners of the land not allowing people to park there anymore.

I guess using a guide book from 1998 didn't work out to well for me. Perhaps next time I will check the DEC website. However at Lapland Lake I got brochure about some other hikes and went to Rock Lake instead. I'll be posting about it later on and sharing photos. Just thought I would inform anyone in case they come across this.

Hurricane Mountain

Hiking Date: May 1st, 2010: With Spring in the middle of its season, I wanted to try a new hike rather then go to my usual close to home hikes I have a tendency to re-hike over and over again. This time I choose Hurricane Mountain mostly because I read a blog entry during the Winter about it and it peaked my curiosity. Not to mention I also heard that the Adirondack Park Agency recommended taking down the fire tower and I wanted to see it before it happened.

Trail Head from Upper Hogtown to Dacy Clearing Closed

I was surprised to read in the Chronicle this morning that the road going to Sleeping Beauty will be closed. Some might know it from Upper Hogtown Parking Area to Dacy Clearing. The announcement comes from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and is most likely due to budget reasons. No reason was mentioned in the Chronicle's article but did say something about a budget crunch. This will mean that the hike going up Sleeping Beauty will be a little bit longer.

Severance Mountain

Hiking Date: September 26th 2009: The Fall Season has arrived and this is an exciting time for me as Fall is my favorite time of the year. I enjoy the hiking this time of year mostly because when the leaf's fall, its almost like something is calling me to go out in the woods and hike. Not to mention the its a lot more enjoyable to go hiking when the weather is not above 90 degrees. For our first hike during the Fall Season, we decided to go to Severance Mountain.

Adirondack Fall Foliage as seen from Space

I came across this very cool picture of  Adirondack Fall Foliage taken from a satellite named Terra at 1Km pixel size on what my guess is Oct. 11th 2003.

West Sacandaga River Water Falls – Fail

Hiking Date: September 5th, 2009: After two weekends of rain and two overnight backpacking trips canceled, this past weekend my friend and I decided to head to some water falls on the West Sacandaga River. As previously mentioned, we had planned to backpack into these waterfalls but opted out when the rain ruined our plans. Unfortunetly due to our schedules, we could not do an overnight trip but decided to do a day hike into the water falls. Following a guide book, we decided to give this trail/bush wack a shot.
