Cathead Mountain – Closed
When deciding on what hike to go on this weekend, I took a look at a guide book I had on my bookshelf and decided to try out Cathead Mountain. So I followed the directions to Northville and began looking for the trail head. I couldn’t find it and just happened to come across Lapland Lake Cross Country Ski Resort. They are a client of ours where I work so I decided to stop in and say hello (and also to get directions). I was informed that Cathead Mountain was closed to the Public due to the owners of the land not allowing people to park there anymore.
I guess using a guide book from 1998 didn’t work out to well for me. Perhaps next time I will check the DEC website. However at Lapland Lake I got brochure about some other hikes and went to Rock Lake instead. I’ll be posting about it later on and sharing photos. Just thought I would inform anyone in case they come across this.

CatHead Mountain is closed to the public because the moutain top and trail access is private property. The landowners (and I am one of them) are supporting a bill in the NYS Legislature that would trade a good deal of the lands around Cathead Mt. and access to the top for a small strip of land that would allow access to an interior lot. Unfortunately the bill (A11307) is sitting in Assemblyman Sweeney’s (from Long Island) Committee and he won’t act on it to send it to the floor for a vote. Purportedly, this is because the ADK Mt Club Board voted to not support the bill, although the Adk Council is in favor. Hard to believe a hiking club is not in favor of hiking, but that’s politics. Thanks for the info.
