Jonathan Volks - Hiker and Blogger for Into the 'Dacks
Greetings fellow Adirondack hikers, my name is Jonathan Volks and welcome to my site; Into the ‘Dacks. This site is full of trip reports and information about hikes and outdoor adventures in the Adirondack Mountains. I want to make it clear that I am not a licensed guide nor do I have any formal education in being a guide. Much like you, I have a passion for the Adirondacks.
About Jonathan Volks
Quick background about myself. I was born, raised and currently live in Glens Falls, NY. My father introduced me to hiking and the outdoors at a young age. One of my fondest memories is hiking Shelving Rock Mountain and Mount Washington. For many years, he and I would drag whomever we could get into the Adirondack Park to join us on an adventure. After he passed away, I took on the mantle of leading the trips. Not easy shoes to fill but I haven’t lost anybody yet.
While hiking, I enjoy landscape photography. My mother bought my first DSLR for Christmas during my college years. Every since I’ve always carried one on a hike. Currently, I am using a Sony A6300. It’s small like a point and shoot but gives me the flexibility of a DSLR. There is still much I need to learn. But with each year, I get a little bit better. One day, I hope to get amazing photos like Carl Heilman. He was the inspiration that got me taking photos while I am on a hike.
My day job is a Web Programmer in the Office of Communications and Marketing at Skidmore College. Building websites has been my nine to five ever since I got my degree in Computer Science at SUNY New Paltz in 2005. I’ve spent my professional life learning the Internet from a programmers perspective. Languages, databases, ISPs, DNS records and pretty much everything that makes a website work. I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the most amazing and talented people in upstate New York.
